Japan experienced their biggest natural disaster in history.

After a magnitude 9 earthquake - the biggest earthquake ever since Japan started recording - Touhoku (north east) area of Japan encountered a large tsunami that no one ever saw coming.

The tsunami struck Japan minutes after the quake in some cases traveling up to 10 km (6 mi) inland.*

The tsunami recorded up to 29.6m - 97 feet high.*
A lot of people could not escape.

Four weeks have passed since the disaster
and Japan continues to need help.

**As of April 7th 2011,
12,690 people are reported dead.
Some can not even be identified.
14,736 people are reported missing.
There are 2,340 temporary shelters and
157,600 people are in one of them.
48,550 homes and buildings are completely destroyed.

Many lost their homes, jobs, businesses and friends.
Many lost their mother, father, sons and daughters.
Some children are now orphans.
